Solar Unit’s microgrid

Microgrids are a key step towards moving from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources

Our microgrid was created within the premises of Chemical Engineering School.

Main power source: A part of the  building integrated PV array  installed on the side walls and the roof of the building are the main power source of the microgrid. The microgrid also features a main grid connectivity.

The heart of the microgrid is an SMA (SMA sunny island) inverter. This inverter is a sophisticated battery charger capable of controlling not only the battery charging but also creating a 220V-50Hz GC.

When there is excess of PV power the inverter directs it to the main grid; In the case of renewable power shortage, the inverter draws power from main grid. If the main grid is unavailable, then power is drawn from a battery power bank. Real life conditions have shown that main-grid power interruptions are very well tackled especially at daylight and sunny days, not rare in Athens.

Battery Bank: Consists of 8 12V 103 Ah OPzS Lead acid units suitably connected to give a 48 V, 203 Ah storage capacity. Heavy duty industrial unit capable of remaining functional of more than 10 years. These units require low maintenance, have long service life and excellent capacity performance while operating in high temperature or unstable power network, and thus provide a premium efficient and cost-effective energy solution.

The main advantage: The PV powered microgrid not only contributes to the carbon emissions reduction but also as a source of uninterrupted and high-quality power, even within urban areas, with easy access to main grid.
